FiveM Server Statistics: What to Monitor and Why It Matters
Running a FiveM server without monitoring is like driving without a dashboard. Everything feels fine until it isn't, and by that point the damage is already done. Players have left, performance has tanked, and you're scrambling to figure out what went wrong. The fix is simple: track the right numbers and check them before your players start complaining.
Reactive vs Proactive Server Management
Most server owners operate reactively. A player reports lag, so you check the console. The server crashes, so you restart it and hope for the best. This works when your server has 20 players. It falls apart at 80.
Proactive management means watching trends over time. Not just "is the server up right now" but "has CPU usage been climbing all week?" or "did player count drop 30% after that last resource update?" The data tells the story before the complaints start.
Why this matters: Catching a performance trend early gives you time to investigate and fix it before players notice.
Player Count Over Time
A single player count snapshot tells you almost nothing. What matters is the trend.
Track player count over hours, days, and weeks. Look for:
- Peak hours - when does your server consistently fill up? This tells you when queue priority matters most.
- Growth or decline - is your average player count going up or down week over week?
- Retention patterns - do players come back after their first session? A sharp drop-off after day one points to onboarding problems or first-impression issues.
- Event impact - did a Discord announcement or community event actually bring more players in?
Player count is the most visible metric, but its value comes from context. A server that peaks at 100 players daily but drops to 15 overnight has a very different profile than one that holds 60 players steady around the clock.
Why this matters: Trending player data helps you plan capacity, time announcements, and measure whether changes to your server are working.
CPU Usage
FiveM servers are CPU-bound. Scripts, player actions, and entity sync all eat processing power, and when the CPU can't keep up, everyone feels it.
Here's a rough guide:
- Under 50% - healthy. Your server has headroom.
- 50% to 70% - watch it. Normal during peak hours, but if it stays here off-peak, something is consuming more than it should.
- Sustained above 80% - problem territory. Players will experience desync, rubber-banding, and slow interactions.
Common causes of high CPU usage include poorly optimized scripts, infinite loops in Lua resources, too many entities spawned at once, and database queries running on the main thread. If you see a CPU spike, check which resources were started or updated around that time.
Why this matters: Sustained high CPU directly causes the lag that drives players away. Spotting it early lets you isolate the cause before it becomes a crisis.
Memory Usage
FiveM servers tend to accumulate memory over time. This is sometimes called memory creep - small leaks in scripts that don't free resources properly, entity data that builds up, or caches that never expire.
A healthy server's memory usage should stay relatively flat during normal operation. If you see a steady upward climb over hours or days without a corresponding increase in player count, something is leaking. The fix is usually a server restart in the short term and tracking down the offending resource in the long term.
Why this matters: Memory creep eventually causes crashes or severe performance degradation. Monitoring it lets you schedule restarts strategically instead of getting surprised.
Tick Rate
The server tick rate defines how many times per second the server processes game logic. The default for FiveM is 64 ticks per second.
When tick rate drops, the server is falling behind. It can't process frames fast enough to keep up with the game loop. This typically correlates with CPU spikes - when the processor is overloaded, tick rate is the first thing to suffer.
Watch for:
- Consistent drops below 50 during peak hours - your server is at its limit
- Sudden spikes downward - a specific script or event is causing a bottleneck
- Gradual decline over hours - likely tied to memory creep or entity accumulation
Cross-reference tick rate drops with CPU and memory charts to pinpoint the root cause. A tick rate drop with normal CPU usually points to a blocking operation like a slow database call.
Why this matters: Tick rate is the most direct measure of how "smooth" your server feels to players. It's the first metric to check when someone reports lag.
Uptime and Crash History
Tracking uptime isn't just about knowing when the server is online. It's about identifying patterns.
Log every crash and every restart. Over time, look for:
- Recurring crash times - does the server crash every night at 3 AM? Probably a scheduled task or cron job gone wrong.
- Crashes after updates - a crash within minutes of a resource update is a strong signal.
- Downtime duration - how long does it take to recover? If recovery takes 10+ minutes, your restart process needs work.
Share uptime data with your community. Players are more forgiving when they can see that downtime is being tracked and addressed, rather than wondering if anyone noticed the server went down.
